A Vision Born from a Pint of Cider

The idea for Cider Bite was born in 2014, when founder Jeff Hanneson had an epiphany over a pint of the only cider available at a local pub. The cider was good, but it left him wondering: Why wasn’t there a place dedicated entirely to cider—a place where people could explore all the incredible variety the craft had to offer?

Driven by his lifelong connection to cider and a love for great drinks shared in good company, Jeff set out to bring that vision to life. On August 1, 2015, after finding the perfect spot in the heart of Portland’s Pearl District, Cider Bite opened its doors. What began as a simple idea soon became a beloved gathering place—a home for discovery, connection, and celebration in Portland’s thriving craft beverage scene.

Founder

From Orchard Roots to Cider Dreams

Our founder, Jeff, didn’t just wake up one day and decide to start a cider house—cider truly ran through his veins. Raised on his family’s apple and filbert orchard and vineyard in Eugene/Springfield, Jeff came from generations deeply rooted in farming and cider-making. The family farm, which had been in operation since 1956, was where the tradition of crafting cider began more than fifty years ago with Jeff’s great-grandfather. Jeff grew up watching his father crank apples through an old wooden cider press, learning the patience, care, and passion behind every batch. Cidermaking wasn’t just a craft—it was a family legacy.

At Cider Bite, Jeff carried that legacy forward in a new way, shifting his focus from making cider to curating the finest selections from other talented cider makers. Cider Bite proudly showcased exceptional craft ciders from around the world, with a special emphasis on small, independent producers from the Pacific Northwest. Every pour was chosen with care, honoring the same spirit of quality, authenticity, and community that inspired Jeff from the very beginning.

At Cider Bite, we offered a carefully curated selection of craft ciders from across the Pacific Northwest (and beyond!), and we were passionate about educating our guests on the history, production, and flavors behind each pour. Whether you were an experienced cider enthusiast or a casual consumer, there was something new to discover every time you visited.
